Description

The primary purpose of a firearm muzzle crown is to provide propellant gases a resistance free path away from all parts of the projectile as it exits the bore of the barrel. The secondary purpose is to protect the actual crown which is the exact point where the bullet leaves the muzzle.

There are two basic types of target crown - the 'step' and the '11 degree'. The muzzle of the step crown is first cut 90 degrees of barrel (square) then about half the muzzle radius is counter sunk with the wall of the counter sink usually at an angle of about 45 degrees. The muzzle of the 11 degree crown is sunk at an angle of 11 degrees from square (79 degrees of barrel). The 11 degree angle extends either the full muzzle radius or the greater part of muzzle radius.

This tool is used to cut an 11 degree target crown in your muzzle. For ideal accuracy, the muzzle exit hole should be perfectly concentric and perpendicular to the barrel ID. If there is a slight chamfer at that point, it must be perfectly concentric and perpendicular. To protect this important edge, most guns are either counter-bored or recessed at a slight angle. Traditionally, that is an 11° angle per side, cut deep enough to cover most of the barrel face. This tool is designed to cut that shape and minimize chatter. It has a 1/4-20 threaded shank to work in a handle for hand cutting, or in a drill adapter for use on a drill press or hand drill. A pilot should always be used and is available on this site in a wide variety of calibers. Cutting fluid should also be used and is available on this site.

5 of 5 Nice tool to have September 14, 2016

Got the tool to crown a 45acp mauser build.  Pilot sits nice and snug in the tool.  It is sharp and cuts smoothly.  It did not have the set screw for the pilot, so i have to get one from ACE.  Otherwise a great tool.  Plan on putting this to use for many future projects

5 of 5 Does an Excellent Job September 16, 2015

After cutting the barrel on my Mosin, I used the 90 degree crowning tool to square up the muzzle to the bore. Then I used this to cut the crown. Using this in my cordless drill at a slow speed, it cut quickly and smoothly.
